2024年9月現在、サンゴプログラムの一部内容変更を判断させていただきました。
沖縄県全域において例年に比べ、7月以降の海水温が高い状態が続いており、水深が浅いエリアを中心に大規模なサンゴの白化現象が報告されています。白化=死滅ではありませんが、白化状態が長く続くと死滅してしまい、藻がサンゴに付きはじめ、時間が経過するとともに 茶色から黒色に見えます。
現在、沖縄本島恩納村万座湾内のサンゴも（天然、養殖いずれも）広範囲で白化、または死滅しています。
植付けるサンゴ苗は一定期間、海中で育成したサンゴ苗を使用しますが、このサンゴ苗が白化または死滅している状況であることから、サンゴ苗の提供元である恩納村漁業協同組合と相談し、当分の間サンゴ植付けダイビングの中止を判断致しました。

今年のサンゴ白化現象を含む様々な地球問題を、人間のスケールのみで判断しないためにも【長尺な目】で観察することが必要だと感じています。
私たちの恩師である、亡き比嘉義視さんもこのような言葉を残してくれています。
「悲しむな、どう記録するかを考えろ。」
過去の記録と共に今後もサンゴの観察（モニタリング）を続ける事が、今ラグーンにできる使命だと判断し行動し続けています。
全ての記録は、これまでお世話になったサンゴの専門家の方々や世界のネットワークへ情報の共有をしています。
こうした記録が、いつの日かサンゴの解明に繋がればと願っています。

サンゴモニタリング一部紹介します。
As of September 2024, we have made a decision to change some of the content of the coral program.
Compared to previous years, seawater temperatures have remained high since July throughout Okinawa Prefecture, and large-scale coral bleaching has been reported, especially in areas with shallow water depths. Bleaching does not necessarily mean death, but if the bleaching continues for a long time, the coral will die and algae will begin to attach to the coral, causing it to appear brown to black in color over time.
Currently, corals (both natural and cultured) in Manza Bay, Onna Village, Okinawa Island, are also bleaching or dying in large areas.
Coral seedlings to be planted are grown in the sea for a certain period of time, but since these coral seedlings are bleaching or dying, we have decided to suspend coral planting dives for the time being in consultation with the Onna Village Fisheries Cooperative Association, the provider of the coral seedlings.

In the 4.6 billion years of history since the birth of the earth, the earth has undergone countless changes.
I feel it is necessary to observe various global issues, including this year's coral bleaching phenomenon, from a [long viewpoint] in order not to judge them solely on a human scale.
Our mentor, the late Mr. Yoshimi Higa, also left us these words.
“Don't be sad; think about how to record it.”
We have decided that our mission at the lagoon is to continue monitoring the corals along with the past records.
All records are shared with the coral experts who have helped us in the past and with our network around the world.
We hope that these records will one day lead to a better understanding of coral.
